La peculiarità di questa zucca sta nelle dimensioni ma soprattutto nella forma. Non essendo praticamente commestibile, la si può usare ornamentalmente, se essiccata bene, come contenitore per liquidi o strumento musicale. Se verniciata si conserva anche per anni.
Essendo una lagenaria la sua crescita è annuale e a vegetazione rapida. La terra nella quale la pianta stessa viene piantata deve comunque essere di ottima qualità e ben concimata
